For Your Ears: Make Music Chicago 2012

I’ve already mentioned Vexations, which is still going strong and will be until midnight.  You can watch Chicago’s live stream below:

 The marathon performance (and surely the premiere performance) of Satie’s piece was first done by John Cage and a group of pianists in 1963, so it seems fitting that this “revival” is taking place during Cage’s centenary.  There also happen to be two more Cage-un events that you might want to check out today:

6:30pm at St. James Cathedral: Third Coast Percussion contributes to the Make Music Chicago finale with a performance of a few works recently recorded on their all-Cage CD/DVD.  It’s a pretty safe bet to say early John Cage percussion music represents the more “fun” side of the composer’s career.  I heard Third Coast perform most of these works at their album release concert last month, which had one of the best conceived set of program notes I’ve ever seen.

7pm at the Oak Street Beach: a.pe.ri.od.ic, known for its post-Cagean programming, presents a lakeshore performance of James Tenney’s Swell Piece.  In this ol’ heat, I’m definitely down for some outdoor music right about now.  Let’s just hope for more waves than rain.

Today is Make Music Chicago, an all day marathon of free live performances and jam sessions.  So what better way to start a marathon than with a worldwide performance of Erik Satie’s Vexations? The 18+ hour piece, which is being spread out across the globe in various cities, has already begun and the Chicago portion begins in roughly three hours.  In case you haven’t heard of this mind-numbing (or hallucination-inducing) piece, full details and can be found here.  There’s also a live video stream if you’re curious/brave enough.  I, for one, will be waking up in two hours to catch the beginning.  I’m hoping to make it through at least 100 repeats.
